Sport Environment delivers the creative vision and development plan for Plymouth’s first new “Star” marine event.
A new Marine City Festival is to be given the green light this week after Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet approved Destination Plymouth’s visitor plan which sets out how the public and private sector will work together to bring £315m into the city and create 2,800 new jobs in the visitor economy by 2020. The plan identifies ‘star projects’ that will inspire visitors to come to Plymouth, get people talking about Plymouth and enrich the city’s marine distinctiveness.
Sport Environment worked with Plymouth Marine Sciences Partnership (PMSP) to create the vision for a brand new flagship marine event that would help position Plymouth as the UK’s leading marine city for science, education, engineering and technology. The Marine Festival will also highlight the strength of Plymouth’s academic research and marine science education; attract an additional 50,000 visitors from outside the region to Plymouth during the festival period and create and maintain new jobs in the city that support the marine sector.
The Marine City Festival’s vision includes four central pillars which focus on science, education, business and culture. Plymouth Marine Laboratory and PMSP will now lead on the science pillar and are planning an international marine science conference. The National Marine Aquarium and Plymouth University will lead the educational pillar, Plymouth’s Chamber of Commerce will lead on the business pillar with Plymouth City Council taking the lead for the cultural pillar.
The date of the inaugural Marine City festival will take place from the 8th-16th September 2012.
Sport Environment wrote the host city bid for the Transat 2008 and secured the public and private sector funding to deliver one of the Plymouth’s most successful marine events. In 2010, they also created the Blue Mile – Race for the Environment, which is now WWF-UK’s leading mass-participation fund raising event designed to encourage greater care of our blue environment.
Conrad Humphreys, Managing Director of Sport Environment said,
“We are extremely pleased that Destination Plymouth and Plymouth City Council have now agreed to take forward the vision for this new and innovative marine festival. The Plymouth Marine Sciences Partners have worked extremely diligently to develop an exciting vision for this event and we look forward to playing a continued role in its future development.”
More details about Plymouth’s Marine City festival will be announced at the launch event on Monday 28th November.
